Extension Activity: Writing a Cover Letter
When sending a resume it is a good idea to attach a cover letter - a one page letter that describes what you are applying from and why you are suited for the job.
Why should I write a cover letter?
Cover letters provide an opportunity to personally connect with an employer. It also allows you to highlight key abilities that you have related to the job.
It is smart to prepare a generic cover letter that you can adapt according to the job to which you are applying.
ACTIVITY:
Using a word processor and online resources, you will create a cover letter.
STEPS:
Look under resources at the bottom of the page and view some example cover letters and read up on tips and good ideas.
Open a word processor and draft a cover letter. Base your cover letter on a job that you have looked at in the Career Exploration section.
Proofread and spell check your cover letter. Also, have someone in the class read your cover letter. Make any changes or updates based on the feedback.
Submit a copy of your cover letter to your instructor to get more feedback.
Key Points to Include in a Cover Letter
- contact information (name, address, company),
- job title that you are applying for
- details demonstrating your understanding of the job
- statement describing that you are the right person for the job
