3) Temporary Agencies

What is a Temp Agency?

A Temp Agency, also called an Employment Agency,  is a business that matches employers looking to quickly fill a position (usually temporarily) with appropriately-skilled employees. Many such agencies maintain files of individuals with an interest in temporary employment.

Temp Agencies Can Give You a "Foot in the Door"

A temporary agency can refer you to a variety of short-term work assignments. They can involve office work and manual labour. The assignments can be as short as one day. Sometimes they can be month-long assignments, and any any of them can lead to full-time employment.

Many companies only find out that they need full-time help through temporary agency assignments. If you prove to be a fit for the company, they may be able to employ your longer term.

You can also improve your experience, skills and resume by working through a temp agency. Another plus is that you can "try out" different types of jobs which can help you decide what job is right for you.

Where Can I Find a Temp Agency?

Every major city will have a variety of temporary agencies with which you can register. To find a listing of agencies:

  1. Use a Yellow Pages phone book
  2. Online Yellow Pages directory (www.yellowpages.ca and search for "Temporary Employment Agencies")
  3. Use your internet searching skills. Use Google or Yahoo, with the search words "Employment Agencies Ottawa" .

When you call an agency, they will often ask you to send in a resume. They may also have you come in for an interview and to do some testing.
