Searching for Jobs

C) Job Interviews

3) Interview Follow-up

"Should I contact the organization after the interview?"

picture of woman on the phoneFollowing up with the individuals who hired you can be very beneficial -- as long as it's done right!

There are three (3) ways that you can follow-up:

1) Telephone

2) Email

3) Letter

Each method is appropriate, but requires some planning.

Email

When sending a follow-up e-mail:

  • Keep it short
  • Send it as a regular email, not as an attachment
  • Limit the length of the message to a few lines
  • Use appropriate business language
  • Watch your spelling!
  • Write a meaningful subject line such as "Interview Follow-up: Sales Associate (Job #54)"

Letter

Writing a thank-you letter for the interview can strengthen the positive impression that you made in person.

Be sure to send it within 24 hours since it will take some time to reach the interviewer's desk.

Telephone

Following up by telephone can be more personal. However, it can be difficult to get a hold of interviewers since they are busy. Be prepared to leave a short, clear message if you can't reach them after a few spaced-out tries.

Starting a Conversation

The following statements can be used when speaking with the interviewer:

  • Is this a good time to talk?

  • I think you'll be interested to know _____.
  • I understand you're still reviewing many applications.

  • I forgot to go into the key details of (something mentioned during the interview) that might be important to you.
  • While listening to you, I neglected to mention my experience in (function). It was too important for me to leave out, since the position calls for substantial background in that area.
  • I was impressed with your _____.
  • I appreciate your emphasis on _____.

Voicemail Message

Before leaving a message, write out what you will say. Keep it short and get to your point quickly. For example

"This is (your name). We met (the date) to discuss the (name of job) job opening. After thinking about our meeting, I wanted to express how much I enjoyed meeting you and hearing about the job. ..."

Key Tips for Effective Follow Up

  • Thank your interviewer for meeting with you
  • Express that you enjoyed the discussion
  • Practice what you will say beforecalling
  • Spell check your letter and email
