Resumes - Your 15 Second Advertisement
15 seconds. That's all that it takes for a recruiter to look at a resume and decide to have you in for an interview.
Make sure it makes a positive impression!
Creating a resume, and keeping it up to date, takes a lot of work. Be prepared for lots of writing, lots of feedback and lots of fixing up!
ACTIVITY:
Draft or update your resume using your Skills Profile Chart from the Career Exploration module.
Your goal is to have a draft completed by the end of class.
STEPS:
Open Microsoft Word and create a new file.
Add your name and contact information with each item on a new line:
- Name
- Address
- Phone Number
- Email Address
Headings that you can use to organize your information include:
- Education
- Work Experience
- Skills
- Certificates and Awards
- Personal Interests
- Volunteering Experience
Be sure to save a your resume file.

Extension Activity: Cover Letters
When you apply for a job, it is a good idea to include a cover letter with your resume. The cover letter is meant to communicate:
a) the job for which you are applying
b) how your skills and experience make you a good candidate
